- The course lasts 3 years and is developed by alternating periods on land (approximately 1.550 hours) with periods of embarkation (total duration: 12 months)
Access requirements
The course is reserved for those in possession of a diploma issued by the Technical Institutes for Transport and Logistics (formerly Nautical Institutes), or for graduates of other secondary schools who have updated their qualifications by attending an alignment course compliant with the MIT Decree of 30/11/2007.
The primary objective is to achieve the skills, abilities, and knowledge required by the STCW Convention '78/95 and subsequent amendments (Manila 2010). You will acquire international safety certifications and the skills required by national regulations and by shipping companies. Great emphasis will be placed on the English language, essential for onboard communication and safety, and you will study legal and contractual regulations, behavioral styles, and professional ethics in order to pass the Maritime Directorate exam for the professional qualification of "Navigation Officer" or "Engine Officer."
SENIOR TECHNICIAN FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF MARITIME EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS – MACHINERY SECTION
• Your Qualification: This course will prepare you to obtain the professional qualification of “Engine Officer” (in English: engine officer; engineer). This qualification is required and certified by the international regulations set out in the IMO STCW Convention, Section A – Regulation III/1.
• Role and Skills: You will be a key pillar in the shipboard hierarchy, responsible for managing the equipment and systems onboard merchant ships. You will acquire the skills necessary to operate and maintain complex systems, ensuring the efficiency and safety of the machinery.
• Career Prospects: The role of Engineer Officer is of great interest in the context of trade and maritime transport of passengers and goods, offering interesting career developments and concrete opportunities for employment and personal fulfillment.
SENIOR TECHNICIAN FOR NAVAL VESSEL MANAGEMENT – DECK SECTION
• Your Qualification: This path will lead you to obtain the professional qualification of “Navigation Officer” (in English: deck officer). This qualification is required and certified by the IMO STCW Convention, Section A – Regulation II/1.
• Role and Skills: You will be a key figure in the deck department, responsible for vessel management and navigation operations. You will acquire the skills for route planning, cargo management, maneuvering, and onboard safety.
• Career Prospects: The qualification of Deck Officer represents a very interesting opportunity within the on-board hierarchy on merchant ships and also in pleasure boating, with interesting career developments and employment prospects and personal fulfilment for young people.
