COMPOSITE MATERIALS
Brindisi office
To Whom?
The workshop is designed for students who want to:
- specialize in composite materials technology and rolling processes;
- learn to design laminates (stacking sequence, fiber orientation) based on loads, weight, and production criteria;
- acquire practical skills on autoclave, resin infusion (VARTM), compression molding;
- integrate composite processing with that of other laboratories (e.g. 3D printing) for the creation and finishing of samples.
It is the ideal context for those aiming for technical and engineering roles in companies that produce composite structures or high-performance lightweight components.
The composite technology laboratory is the space where theory and practice on advanced composite materials they meet.
Students follow the entire cycle (design → production → measurement → improvement), from laminate design to specimen testing, up to process optimization.
The goal is to train professionals capable of designing and manufacturing high-performance composite components, carefully selecting technologies, layouts, and process parameters, while addressing the real needs of the aerospace, automotive, nautical, and structural engineering industries.
In the composite technology laboratory, students work on real cases and develop transversal skills through:
Design and planning
- lay-up definition (fiber sequence and orientation);
- choice of materials (fibers, matrices) and most suitable process: autoclave, resin infusion, compression molding;
- vacuum bagging/infusion planning and testing plan (DFM/DFP criteria).
Manufacturing and forming
- lamination of prepreg and dry reinforcements;
- setting up vacuum bags and infusion circuits on a heated table;
- temperature, pressure and vacuum control during cycles autoclave for prepreg; compression molding with heated plates, resin infusion with flow and wetting management.
Cutting, finishing and CAD/CAM
Mechanical tests and characterization
- evidence of traction, compression and bending on test specimens made with different processes/materials;
- acquisition of stress-strain curves and evaluation of structural performance;
- determination of fiber/resin content and porosity using ovens and precision scales;
- analysis of the results and improvement loop: layout update, process parameters and standardization.
The laboratory is equipped with comprehensive facilities to cover the entire life cycle of the composite component.
- Autoclave for prepreg;
- Compression molding press;
- Heated table for lamination, vacuum bagging and resin infusion;
- CNC pantograph for cutting specimens;
- Dynamometer for mechanical tests;
- Ovens, scales and support equipment.
COURSE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.
